Support your high school counselor!

Help these people help the students and parents they serve

I want to throw in a plug here for the work that high school counselors are out there doing because high school counselors have a tough job.

The American School Counselor Association recommends that the high school counselor:student ration be around 250 students on average.

The reality is that in most high schools nationwide, high school counselors serve 376+ — and this isn’t just in the area of college counseling. High school counselors provide services including academic plans, social and behavioral support, and college and career support.

Students and parents should consider doing some of the work behind the scenes to help their high school counselor help them. It’s nothing more than a numbers thing.

Again, and I keep saying this, but the numbers are screaming at us. We just have to hear what they are saying.

According to IECA, the average independent educational consultant serves about 24 students annually. IECs aren’t working against high school counselors — they working to help students and parents support that person for maximum results.

Q: Does a student need an IEC to be successful in the college application process?

A: No. In fact, one of the missions of both College App Help Desk and RIGHT My College Application Essay is to give students and parents the DIY tools they need to put in the sweat equity and be successful in the process.

Some parents, and some students, will need the extra support of test prep, tutors, IEC, financial planners, and counselors along the way, and we’re here to help point families in the directions they need.
