The Vibe: A literary and creative haven where students are given the financial and human resources to “dream up their own potential.”

• The Hendrix-Murphy Foundation: This foundational powerhouse heavily funds and supports the Theater, English, and Language departments. They host a Distinguished Visitor Series bringing 2 to 3 world-class creators to campus every single quarter.

• Murphy Scholars Program: Highly selective community of language and literature lovers (~35 students per year, turning away just as many as apply). It grants a $4,000 earmark specifically for practicing writing, public speaking, and collaborative projects.

• Fully Funded Summer Travel: Under the foundation, students can propose custom study-travel projects based entirely on their own niche interests, which are fully funded by the college (usually executed during the summer). First-year applications open at the beginning of the spring semester.

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) is widely celebrated as one of the most lyrically intense German-language poets of the 20th century. His philosophical depth, musical verses, and his ability to articulate the complexities of human existence, art, and spirituality won his way straight into this English major’s heart. “Letters to a Young Poet,” Stephen Mitchell translation, is life-changing.
