We just jumped off a long call reviewing our upcoming summer onboarding for rising seniors. It’s absolutely beautiful outside right now, but inside our offices, the pressure is ramping up.

Students are starting to brainstorm their Common App essays, parents are panicking about the transition to college, and the marketing engines of elite universities are officially kicking into high gear.

Today, we wanted to pull back the curtain on three things every family of a high school junior or senior needs to hear right now: the incredible value of small/medium schools, the myth of the “Yale letter,” and why you need to have a formal family financial meeting before the essays get written.

1. Don’t Let “Graduation Rates” Scare You Away from Small Schools

As college consultants, we find it incredibly easy to fall into the trap of filtering out schools based strictly on benchmarks. Many advisors won’t even consider a school unless its baseline graduation rate on College Navigator is above 50 percent.

But our colleague Peter—an expert on small and mid-sized institutions—has been challenging us to rethink that math.

There are incredible schools out there with student populations under 1,000 that offer life-changing opportunities. For example, did you know that Kenyon College in Ohio has boasted a near-100-percent acceptance rate into medical school for its pre-med graduates over recent years? Or look at Colorado College, which runs a unique “block schedule” in which students dive into a single subject intensely for a month, followed by a 4.5-day weekend to explore the Rockies. It’s essentially an incredible bridge to adulting.

From Centre College in Kentucky to the hidden gems of the South, there is a massive world outside of the U.S. News & World Report rankings. Don’t let rigid database filters cheat your kid out of a perfect fit.

2. That Letter from Yale? It’s an Ad, Not an Invitation.

Right about now, rising seniors are opening their mailboxes to find glamorous, personalized letters from Ivy League and highly selective universities saying: “We want you. Apply to us.”

The Reality Check: It’s a marketing funnel. Some will tell you, “We saw your SAT scores” but others won’t mention how they got your name.

Colleges pay millions of dollars for predictive modeling and data lists. They buy student information from test agencies just to generate leads. They need thousands of students to apply so they can reject 97% of them, keeping their enrollment percentages artificially low to protect their “highly selective” rankings.

If a school has a 3% acceptance rate, that does not mean your student has a 3% chance of admission. The math is not cumulative. Families must do the math on the 97% chance of not getting in. If you simply pile your list high with these lottery-ticket schools, the statistical math doesn’t work in your favor.

Enjoy the dopamine hit of the letter, take it to your guidance counselor with a smile, but treat it exactly like what it is: a business advertisement.

3. The “Step Three” Family Financial Audit

ESSAY CURE has a strict 10-step process for onboarding rising seniors. Steps 1 and 2 allow the students to dream a bit, explore their lists, and find their reach schools. Step Three is where the rubber meets the road.

Before a student falls deeply in love with a campus or spends 20 hours drafting bespoke supplemental essays, they are handed a mandatory homework assignment: A formal, one-hour financial conversation with their parents.

Families must sit down and answer a checklist of tough questions:

• What is our bottom-line application budget? (At $60 to $90 per submission, applying to 12+ schools adds up fast).

• What is our actual buying power for the next four years?

• If your student is in the middle-income bracket (e.g., a dual-income family making $200k/year), you may not qualify for need-based aid, but still can’t comfortably write a check for full tuition. What is the plan for merit aid?

We require students to return a signed PDF confirming they’ve reviewed every bullet point on the financial sheet. It feels heavy early on, but it protects everyone from devastating heartbreaks come April of senior year.

“If we already have the money set aside to pay for college out of pocket, should we even bother filling out these invasive financial aid forms?”

The short, definitive answer from higher education insiders is yes. Here is exactly why sitting out the financial aid application process can backfire—and what colleges aren’t telling you about their business models.

1. Putting Your “Buying Power” to Work

There is a massive difference between what a family thinks a college should do and what the college’s enrollment strategy actually dictates. Every family expects a university to look at their straight-A, high-scoring-SAT student and say, “We want them, and we’ll pay to have them sit in our seats.” But higher education is a marketplace. If you have the financial resources to pay for school, you have buying power. Filing your financial aid forms gives you the leverage to put that buying power to work.

If you check the box that says, “No, I’m not applying for financial aid,” you are signaling to the school that you are willing to pay 100% of the sticker price —which at elite schools can easily breach $100,000 a year ($400,000 for a four-year degree).

2. The Danger of Changing Your Mind Too Late

Many parents choose not to apply because of a “fear factor” — they don’t want the government or institutions looking closely at their assets, businesses, or home equity.

However, opting out from the beginning draws a hard line in the sand. If you bypass the FAFSA and CSS Profile during the initial application window, get accepted, and then decide to ask for money later because of peer pressure or a shift in financial circumstances, you could find yourself completely trapped. Once institutional merit and need-based pies are sliced up and distributed to early applicants, that money is gone. If you haven’t documented your financials with the required forms from day one, colleges have zero framework to evaluate an appeal.

3. Merit Aid vs. Need-Based Aid: The Two-Screen System

It helps to look at college funding through a “two-screen system”:

Screen 1: Merit Aid Handed out by the admissions office to entice high-achieving students to enroll. Based on GPAs and test scores.

Screen 2: Need-Based Aid Handed out by the financial aid office. Strictly calculated based on family resources.

The catch? Many elite institutions blend these two worlds. Schools like the University of Virginia (UVA) are need-blind for admissions but highly rigorous regarding financial aid. They require both the FAFSA and the CSS Profile because their business model demands full financial disclosure before they dip into their endowments. Even if your child qualifies for a merit-based “teaser” scholarship, certain schools will outright refuse to award it if you haven’t filled out the CSS Profile.

The Invasive Nature of the CSS Profile: While the FAFSA looks at bare-bones household income, the CSS Profile goes much deeper—asking about your retirement contributions, business revenues, and home equity. They want to see if you have the means to “pony up” for their specific product.

4. The Shifting Rules of Households and “Skin in the Game”

The rules governing these forms are constantly changing, making the process highly confusing for modern families:

• The Divorced/Separated Shift: The FAFSA no longer looks strictly at who the student lives with the most. Instead, it looks at who provides 51% or more of the financial support.

• The Household Income Trap: If a single parent moves a partner into the house, that partner’s income can be factored into the overall household income under FAFSA rules, even if they aren’t married, and the partner doesn’t contribute a dime to tuition.

Filling out the FAFSA—even for affluent families—also allows you to access federal student loans. For many parents, this isn’t about needing the cash; it’s about giving their student “skin in the game.” Having a minor loan in their name teaches financial literacy and creates a psychological incentive to graduate on time and keep debt down.

The Bottom Line: View College as a Major Purchase

At the end of the day, higher education is a commercial transaction. You are purchasing a product. You wouldn’t pull your car into a mechanic’s garage and agree to a $10,000 brake job without looking at the parts, or fail to negotiate standard consumer discounts.

Don’t let fear or privacy concerns keep you from utilizing the system’s baseline tools. File the forms, learn how specific schools distribute their money, and protect your financial options before the clock runs out.

Whether it’s discovering a passion for aviation in the Coast Guard or building leadership as a non-commissioned officer in the Marines, the military uncovers internal talents that traditional classrooms often miss.

2. Enrolled: Redefining “Higher Ed”

Being “enrolled” doesn’t have to mean moving into a costly four-year university dorm right away. There are smarter, highly affordable ways to approach education:

• The Community College Pipeline: Many states offer seamless, guaranteed transfer programs. For example, in Virginia and Massachusetts, students can spend their first two years at a community college and—with a specific GPA—secure guaranteed admission to participating public or private four-year universities.

• Certificates & Credentials: Technical fields, IT, and specialized industries care far more about specific, verifiable skill credentials (many obtainable online) than a general bachelor’s degree.

3. Employed: Entering the Workforce & The Trades

Stepping straight into employment or pursuing an apprenticeship in the trades (like becoming an electrician or a plumber) is a direct path to financial independence.

• The “Lifelong Learning” Reality: Choosing work right out of high school doesn’t mean your education stops. Sales training programs, financial planning licenses, and specialized certifications are open to anyone with the right drive.

• On-the-Job Training (OJT): Combining real-world experience with a few business courses at a community college can quickly pave the way toward entrepreneurship.

Choosing a path isn’t about following what the neighbors are doing; it’s an individual blueprint. Every student needs to weigh their own maturity and academic alignment against their family’s financial capability. If a student isn’t ready, forcing them into a massive university can lead to costly false starts.

Becoming a Smart Higher Education “Consumer”

If your student does choose the enrollment path, families need to shift from an emotional mindset to a consumer mindset. We meticulously research houses, cars, and even couches—yet we rarely apply that same rigorous consumer behavior to buying a college education.

To take back control from the elite marketing machines of higher education, ask yourself and the institutions these critical questions:

• What is the real faculty-to-student ratio? Are you paying top dollar to sit in a 500-student lecture hall taught by graduate teaching assistants, or are you in front of tenured professors?

• Big Pond vs. Small Pond? Does your student have the self-advocacy skills to navigate a massive state school of 60,000 people, or will they thrive as a “big pebble” in a smaller, medium-sized school environment?

• Is the program stable? Higher education is facing massive budget contractions. Don’t be afraid to ask an admissions office direct questions about whether specific majors or minors are at risk of being eliminated due to being undersubscribed.

The Flame Within

Ultimately, institutional prestige doesn’t dictate your future. Books like Who Gets In and Why and Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be emphasize a fundamental truth: a student’s long-term success is fueled by the internal flame and drive they possess, not the name on their freshman dorm building.

Whether it’s the military, an apprenticeship, a community college, or a four-year institution—the goal is finding the right glove that fits the individual hand.

The Reality of Athletic Scholarships: Breaking Down the Divisions

Many families view athletics as the primary means to finance higher education. However, the funding structure varies dramatically depending on the school and the sport:

• Divisions I and II: These divisions can award athletic scholarships (this pool of money also frequently covers performing arts, marching band, and cheerleading). However, a roster spot does not guarantee a full ride.

• Division III: This is a strictly non-scholarship athletics division.

• Headcount vs. Equivalency Sports: Even at the DI and DII levels, many sports are underfunded. For example, a college might have 12 players on a golf team but only 5 total scholarships to distribute. The coach might split that money up into partial scholarships or give it only to top performers. Furthermore, some sports (such as swimming at certain institutions) may receive no scholarship funding.

A Crucial Reminder: Athletic scholarships are not guaranteed for four years. If a student underperforms, faces an injury, or struggles to balance the load, a coach can reduce or entirely pull that scholarship to fill the next incoming class.

The Identity Trap: When the Sport Outlasts the Degree

A major risk for high school athletes is making the sport their entire identity. When choosing a college, they often chase the division level (like aiming exclusively for DI) instead of checking if the school actually fits their future professional goals.

Christine shares a pattern she sees frequently with freshmen and sophomores looking to transfer:

“They come back after winter break and say, ‘Lacrosse or baseball has been great, but I need to find a profession. I just realized I love economics, but my school doesn’t even offer that major.’ Because they chose the school entirely for the sport, they are forced to transfer out to get the degree they actually want.”

College sports are essentially a full-time job. Between 5:30 AM workouts, mandatory study halls, film sessions, and practices that end late at night, the sheer demands can quickly drain the fun out of the game if the environment isn’t right.

Sports as an “Add-on” to Keep You Whole

Athletics should be an incredible addition to your college experience, not the singular pillar holding it up. You need to ask yourself: If I get hurt, if my skill level drops, or if I simply don’t want to play anymore, will I still love being a student at this college?

Choosing a school should prioritize:

1. Academic growth and professional skills.

2. Personal and social alignment.

3. Athletics is a component that keeps you balanced and healthy.

If competitive team sports lose their luster, a great campus environment allows you to pivot smoothly into intramurals, club sports, or casual weekend games while keeping your degree on track.

Normalizing the Pivot: Transfers and Alternative Paths

If a student does find themselves at the wrong school, changing direction shouldn’t be viewed negatively. Whether it’s moving from a DI program to a DIII school or utilizing the incredibly affordable pathway of community college before transferring to a four-year university, pivoting is a sign of growth.

When you enter the workforce, employers rarely care about college name-dropping. They want to know:

• Do you have the necessary skills?

• Are you trainable and adaptable?

• Can you show commitment to a progressive process?

To wrap up today’s conversation, Christine highlighted two massive myths surrounding the college essay process:

• Myth: Students don’t just “sit down and write a rough draft.” Doing this means white-knuckling the way through writing rather than trusting the steps in the process. Don’t worry about polishing grammar during the writing process; focus entirely on the content and what you are trying to communicate.

• Myth: My student is a “good writer” vs. my student is a “bad writer.” Students who are applying to college already know how to write. The real challenge is learning how to communicate. Since students don’t know who the admissions reader will be (let alone their personal filters), students must write cleanly, authentically, and strictly from their own perspective, avoiding the use of the persuasive “you” and embracing the narrative “I.”

The ultimate goal? Turn your reader into your advocate. Use the essay to move your application from the “maybe” pile to the “oh, you have to read this” pile.

Tips for Parents: Stepping Back to Let Them Fly

As parents, it is entirely natural to want to put our children on our shoulders so they can reach higher than we did. But as the book How to Raise an Adult points out, sometimes the best thing we can do is let them be their authentic selves and find their own way.

Here is how you can help them find the right environment without the high pressure:

• Treat it like a major purchase: You wouldn’t buy a car or a living room couch in a single afternoon without evaluating whether it fits your family’s lifestyle. Treat college with the same practical approach.

• Start early and softly: If you have a high school sophomore, use weekends to casually drive by different campuses. Don’t book formal tours yet, and don’t lecture. Just let them get a feel for the physical size, the buildings, and the environment to see what resonates with them.

• Validate alternative paths: If your student isn’t ready for college immediately after senior year, validate that choice. Finding their authentic identity matters much more than rushing into a bad fit.

The Bottom Line

Colleges absolutely offer merit scholarships to students with a 3.0 GPA. The secret sauce is finding the environment where your students’ social, emotional, and academic identities can genuinely thrive.

But according to college planning advisor Tom O’Hare, too many families are approaching the process entirely backward. Instead of finding a school that fits their financial, academic, and social realities, they fall in love with a “Gucci brand name” first and look at the crippling price tag only when it’s too late.

To clear the air, we’re breaking down the first two of the most common myths and misunderstandings that lead to the infamous “February Freakouts” and heartbreak on May 1.

Myth #1: “We make too much money to qualify for financial aid.”

If college advisors had a dollar for every time they heard this phrase, they wouldn’t need to advise anymore.

Many middle- and upper-income families assume that because their household income sits in the six figures, the financial aid process is a complete dead end. They look at a university’s astronomical sticker price, assume they must pay every cent out of pocket, and immediately limit their options—or worse, panic.

Here is the reality check: Financial aid is a matching game, not just a baseline income cutoff.

If your student applies exclusively to elite institutions oversubscribed with applications, those schools have zero incentive to discount their price. They have a line out the door. However, there are thousands of outstanding, top-tier institutions looking for specific student profiles. Even if you have “zero financial need” on paper, a school that actively wants your student may invest heavily in your family through merit aid and institutional scholarships to get them on campus.

Start in 10th or 11th Grade

Do not wait until April of senior year to run the numbers. Calculate your expected net price early. Pushing financial realities down the road is how families end up facing a $40,000 annual gap, tempting them to drain 401(k)s or take out private loans.

Myth #2: “Only the top students get into their dream schools.”

We live in a culture obsessed with selectivity rates and U.S. News & World Report rankings. Students are subtly taught that their self-worth is entirely tied to the brand-name ranking of the college acceptance letter they hold.

The truth? Highly selective schools often pour massive marketing budgets into driving up application volumes just so they can deny more students and look more “elite.”

A true “dream school” isn’t a trophy for your car bumper; it’s an environment where a student actually thrives. To find it, look for a school that satisfies the Five Pieces of the Circle:

• Academic Opportunity: Does the school give the student space to pivot? (e.g., if they start in engineering but want to shift to a different passion, does the school support that transition?).

• Personal Surroundings: Does the campus culture match who the student actually is inside, allowing them to remain authentic?

• Social Environment: Will they feel comfortable walking across campus? If a student thrives in a casual, creative environment, a rigid, hyper-traditional corporate campus culture won’t be a good fit, no matter how prestigious it is.

• Affordability: Does it fit into the family’s true financial tolerance without causing generational debt?

• Career Blueprinting: Does the school actively set students up to discuss internships, jobs, and networking by their junior year—not the final semester of senior year?

Once you graduate and secure your first real job, your employer cares about your skills, reliability, and teachability—not where you got your diploma. Whether a student starts at a community college and transfers or goes to an excellent mid-tier university, their success is dictated by what they invest in the campus, not the name on the gate.

The Sanity Saver: The One-Hour Rule

College planning is an eighteen-month marathon, and it is incredibly easy for it to consume family dynamics, turning car rides and dinner tables into high-stress interrogation zones.

To keep the peace, try implementing the One-Hour Rule:

• Constrain all college research, applications, and financial discussions to a dedicated one hour per week.

• When that hour is up, the topic is completely closed.

This gives both parents and students the mental boundaries to pause, step back, and plan with clear eyes rather than react out of panic.

Remember: Plan B and Plan C can be just as fulfilling, vibrant, and successful as Plan A. Students just ned to build a diversified list early enough to see them.
