We just jumped off a long call reviewing our upcoming summer onboarding for rising seniors. It’s absolutely beautiful outside right now, but inside our offices, the pressure is ramping up.

Students are starting to brainstorm their Common App essays, parents are panicking about the transition to college, and the marketing engines of elite universities are officially kicking into high gear.

Today, we wanted to pull back the curtain on three things every family of a high school junior or senior needs to hear right now: the incredible value of small/medium schools, the myth of the “Yale letter,” and why you need to have a formal family financial meeting before the essays get written.

1. Don’t Let “Graduation Rates” Scare You Away from Small Schools

As college consultants, we find it incredibly easy to fall into the trap of filtering out schools based strictly on benchmarks. Many advisors won’t even consider a school unless its baseline graduation rate on College Navigator is above 50 percent.

But our colleague Peter—an expert on small and mid-sized institutions—has been challenging us to rethink that math.

There are incredible schools out there with student populations under 1,000 that offer life-changing opportunities. For example, did you know that Kenyon College in Ohio has boasted a near-100-percent acceptance rate into medical school for its pre-med graduates over recent years? Or look at Colorado College, which runs a unique “block schedule” in which students dive into a single subject intensely for a month, followed by a 4.5-day weekend to explore the Rockies. It’s essentially an incredible bridge to adulting.

From Centre College in Kentucky to the hidden gems of the South, there is a massive world outside of the U.S. News & World Report rankings. Don’t let rigid database filters cheat your kid out of a perfect fit.

2. That Letter from Yale? It’s an Ad, Not an Invitation.

Right about now, rising seniors are opening their mailboxes to find glamorous, personalized letters from Ivy League and highly selective universities saying: “We want you. Apply to us.”

The Reality Check: It’s a marketing funnel. Some will tell you, “We saw your SAT scores” but others won’t mention how they got your name.

Colleges pay millions of dollars for predictive modeling and data lists. They buy student information from test agencies just to generate leads. They need thousands of students to apply so they can reject 97% of them, keeping their enrollment percentages artificially low to protect their “highly selective” rankings.

If a school has a 3% acceptance rate, that does not mean your student has a 3% chance of admission. The math is not cumulative. Families must do the math on the 97% chance of not getting in. If you simply pile your list high with these lottery-ticket schools, the statistical math doesn’t work in your favor.

Enjoy the dopamine hit of the letter, take it to your guidance counselor with a smile, but treat it exactly like what it is: a business advertisement.

3. The “Step Three” Family Financial Audit

ESSAY CURE has a strict 10-step process for onboarding rising seniors. Steps 1 and 2 allow the students to dream a bit, explore their lists, and find their reach schools. Step Three is where the rubber meets the road.

Before a student falls deeply in love with a campus or spends 20 hours drafting bespoke supplemental essays, they are handed a mandatory homework assignment: A formal, one-hour financial conversation with their parents.

Families must sit down and answer a checklist of tough questions:

• What is our bottom-line application budget? (At $60 to $90 per submission, applying to 12+ schools adds up fast).

• What is our actual buying power for the next four years?

• If your student is in the middle-income bracket (e.g., a dual-income family making $200k/year), you may not qualify for need-based aid, but still can’t comfortably write a check for full tuition. What is the plan for merit aid?

We require students to return a signed PDF confirming they’ve reviewed every bullet point on the financial sheet. It feels heavy early on, but it protects everyone from devastating heartbreaks come April of senior year.

Christine just returned from an intensive, 5-day, 10-college tour organized by SACAC (Southern Association of College Admissions Counselors) where she toured a fascinating mix of institutions: Rhodes College, LeMoyne-Owen, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Philander Smith, Hendrix, University of the Ozarks, University of Arkansas, University of Central Arkansas, and University of Memphis.

The goal? To learn about these colleges so that she can help steer students to a good academic, social, and financial fit. • The ACT Policy: They accept the ACT with or without the science portion and will selectively use whichever variation benefits the student’s application score the most.

Engineering Spotlight

• Top-Tier but Accessible: Engineering is not fiercely competitive to get into, but it is incredibly rigorous to stay in.

• VIP Resources: Engineering students get exclusive, dedicated academic and financial aid advisors housed right inside their department.

• Direct Corporate Recruiting: Major employers regularly flood the department to review student resumes, give direct hiring feedback, and hand out premium internship slots.

Elite Competitive Programs

• Rhodes Scholar Pipeline: Ole Miss is impressively tied for second with Vanderbilt for producing Rhodes Scholars.

• Accounting & Finance: A massive pipeline that sends graduates directly into investment banking and straight into private equity.

• Center for the Study of Southern Culture: Focuses on “words in motion” to help students unlock their identity. Features a fleet of 100-level courses counting toward the humanities core and a Master’s in Documentary Expression.

• The Croft Institute for International Studies: Intensive language, international government, and politics training. Includes placement tests so students never hit a glass ceiling. They choose 30 Early Action students to automatically be considered for interviews, ultimately selecting the top 8 (4 in-state, 4 out-of-state). They look for high scores, school profiles, community service, and a genuine alignment with global travel and career goals.

• Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College: Represents the top 10% of students. Features a 15–20:1 student-teacher ratio, 30 mandatory hours a year, guaranteed undergraduate research funding, a study abroad fellowship, and a capstone requirement that ensures every student gets published.

• The Pharmacy Flagship: A 6-year early-entry program where the final 2 years are spent at the medical school in Jackson. They emphasize that modern pharmacy isn’t just working at a retail counter—graduates go into institutional, cosmetic, veterinary, oncology, transplant, and sports pharmacy (the only school in the country with the sports designation).

• School of Education Commitment: A unique program that operates as a forgivable loan rather than a traditional scholarship. In exchange for covered cost gaps, students do classroom observations in their freshman year, complete a capstone/thesis, and commit to teaching in-state for 5 years.

• Lott Leadership Institute: Highly competitive (50–70 students per year). Looking for hyper-visible campus leaders to hone practical applications of leadership. Includes a leadership endorsement that counts toward core classes.

LeMoyne-Owen College is a private, historically Black college (HBCU) in Memphis, Tennessee, with roots tracing back to 1862 when the American Missionary Association (AMA) opened a school for freedmen and runaway slaves. Established during the Civil War, the institution was rebuilt as Lincoln Chapel after being destroyed in the 1866 Memphis riots. LeMoyne College and Owen College merged in 1968 to form the current institution. Today, the college is a United Negro College Fund member, offering 22 majors while situated in Memphis' historic Soulsville district.

• The Syllabus AI Clause: In a very modern move, Rhodes requires an AI clause in syllabi so students clearly understand exactly what is expected of them regarding generative artificial intelligence in their coursework.

According to Fiske, Rhodes goes “head-to-head with Sewanee for the top spot in the pecking order of mid-South liberal arts colleges, with Rhodes the more progressive of the two. While Sewanee has a gorgeous rural campus, Rhodes has Memphis and its red-hot music scene. Natural and social sciences head the list of solid programs, and undergraduate research opportunities are plentiful. Strong honor system.”

Throw in Memphis’s music scene, Beale Street, barbecue, the blues, biology, business, chemistry, economics, English, history, music business, and psychology, and there’s something for every student at Rhodes.

I’d set my alarm with plenty of time. I’d planned ahead for coffee and coordinated a shower with my suitemates (six women, two showers, two sinks, one toilet — no small task!) Coffee and breakfast before the long bus ride went swimmingly.

I returned to my dorm room to put the final touches on my travel gear.

Confidently packed and organized, I stepped out into the hallway to meet my ~30 high school and college counselors peers as we embarked on our first full day of a whirlwind weeklong 10-college tour.

Only — nobody else was there.

I stood with my luggage in the hallway. Alone.

Did I miss the bus?

I adjusted my carry-on strap to cross-body and ran with my roller bag toward the street.

Thankfully, the bus hadn’t yet pulled away. Ted (as I came to know the driver’s name during the week) gave me both a fist-bump and a hard time for being late. (He jokingly did this for the rest of the trip. Ted was The. Best.)

I boarded the bus to face the same scrutiny and apprehension as if I were the last to board an aircraft: Please don’t sit by me. Please don’t sit by me. Please don’t sit by me. Nobody wanted to share a seat.

The very last row in the bus, still empty, called out to me. As it turns out, it was perfect. I could lie flat with somewhere to brace my feet, and I had a window to the world all my own. I could sit up during the drive and engage with others, or I could comfortably retreat into my own space. I’m an Aquarius, so I need both; the back seat got me.

Midway through the week, the back seat of the bus became the most dangerous. (Spoiler: I’m fine.) As we toured a college, landscapers outside blew the back window of the bus out with a weed-eater. Apparently, my beloved seat was the worst casualty, scattered with a large shard of glass and a gazillion tiny pieces.

As we waited for our replacement bus, the school that was expecting us dispatched its own private vehicles to pick us up. People helping people. Things happen. Life is messy. We do what we can to flex and help one another. College shows us how to find the best version of ourselves through social and academic growth, but it also shows us how to step up and serve those in need.

My wish for all of my students has always been that when the worst thing happens, they find that a door closed opens other doors. It happens more often than we know, and the universe is shockingly intuitive. The college application process is ripe with examples.

My personal project last week was to take photos on campus that speak to me — not necessarily the ones that land in a glossy campus brochure. I have the equipment, credentials, and knowledge to take those brochure photos — but that’s not what I was looking to do this trip. I wanted to show students that every campus speaks to each of us differently. I faced many constraints: I couldn’t alter the image, I couldn’t use artificial lighting (strobe or flash), and I couldn’t delay or hold up the tour to get the shot.

But a tricky question frequently comes up for families who have saved diligently, inherited money, or have education trusts locked and loaded for their kids:

“If we already have the money set aside to pay for college out of pocket, should we even bother filling out these invasive financial aid forms?”

The short, definitive answer from higher education insiders is yes. Here is exactly why sitting out the financial aid application process can backfire—and what colleges aren’t telling you about their business models.

1. Putting Your “Buying Power” to Work

There is a massive difference between what a family thinks a college should do and what the college’s enrollment strategy actually dictates. Every family expects a university to look at their straight-A, high-scoring-SAT student and say, “We want them, and we’ll pay to have them sit in our seats.” But higher education is a marketplace. If you have the financial resources to pay for school, you have buying power. Filing your financial aid forms gives you the leverage to put that buying power to work.

If you check the box that says, “No, I’m not applying for financial aid,” you are signaling to the school that you are willing to pay 100% of the sticker price —which at elite schools can easily breach $100,000 a year ($400,000 for a four-year degree).

2. The Danger of Changing Your Mind Too Late

Many parents choose not to apply because of a “fear factor” — they don’t want the government or institutions looking closely at their assets, businesses, or home equity.

However, opting out from the beginning draws a hard line in the sand. If you bypass the FAFSA and CSS Profile during the initial application window, get accepted, and then decide to ask for money later because of peer pressure or a shift in financial circumstances, you could find yourself completely trapped. Once institutional merit and need-based pies are sliced up and distributed to early applicants, that money is gone. If you haven’t documented your financials with the required forms from day one, colleges have zero framework to evaluate an appeal.

3. Merit Aid vs. Need-Based Aid: The Two-Screen System

It helps to look at college funding through a “two-screen system”:

Screen 1: Merit Aid Handed out by the admissions office to entice high-achieving students to enroll. Based on GPAs and test scores.

Screen 2: Need-Based Aid Handed out by the financial aid office. Strictly calculated based on family resources.

The catch? Many elite institutions blend these two worlds. Schools like the University of Virginia (UVA) are need-blind for admissions but highly rigorous regarding financial aid. They require both the FAFSA and the CSS Profile because their business model demands full financial disclosure before they dip into their endowments. Even if your child qualifies for a merit-based “teaser” scholarship, certain schools will outright refuse to award it if you haven’t filled out the CSS Profile.

The Invasive Nature of the CSS Profile: While the FAFSA looks at bare-bones household income, the CSS Profile goes much deeper—asking about your retirement contributions, business revenues, and home equity. They want to see if you have the means to “pony up” for their specific product.

4. The Shifting Rules of Households and “Skin in the Game”

The rules governing these forms are constantly changing, making the process highly confusing for modern families:

• The Divorced/Separated Shift: The FAFSA no longer looks strictly at who the student lives with the most. Instead, it looks at who provides 51% or more of the financial support.

• The Household Income Trap: If a single parent moves a partner into the house, that partner’s income can be factored into the overall household income under FAFSA rules, even if they aren’t married, and the partner doesn’t contribute a dime to tuition.

Filling out the FAFSA—even for affluent families—also allows you to access federal student loans. For many parents, this isn’t about needing the cash; it’s about giving their student “skin in the game.” Having a minor loan in their name teaches financial literacy and creates a psychological incentive to graduate on time and keep debt down.

The Bottom Line: View College as a Major Purchase

At the end of the day, higher education is a commercial transaction. You are purchasing a product. You wouldn’t pull your car into a mechanic’s garage and agree to a $10,000 brake job without looking at the parts, or fail to negotiate standard consumer discounts.

Don’t let fear or privacy concerns keep you from utilizing the system’s baseline tools. File the forms, learn how specific schools distribute their money, and protect your financial options before the clock runs out.

Too often, writing these notes feels like a chore, churning out predictable, linear lines: “Thank you for the gift. It was very nice. I will use it in college.”

By turning conventional wisdom upside down and focusing on how you make the recipient feel, you can craft a memorable, deeply impactful thank-you note—which we call a “You-Thank”—in exactly four sentences and under four minutes.

Here is how to use the 80/20 rule of writing to master the ultimate appreciation hack.

Step 1: Flip the Writing Process (The 80/20 Rule)

The 80/20 rule states that roughly 80% of your outcomes come from 20% of your inputs. In writing, we break this down into three steps: Communicate (60%), Navigate (30%), and Punctuate (10%).

Most writers spend way too much time obsessing over grammar and spelling early on. That is the equivalent of eating a slice of cheesecake and immediately brushing your teeth with toothpaste—it’s a gross mix that ruins both experiences.

Let go of perfectionism. Dump your ideas onto the page first. Focus heavily on your content (Clarity) and your organization (Coherence) before you even think about your mechanics (Concision).

Writing is not a linear process. In fact, to write a great You-Thank, we are going to start by writing it completely out of order.

Step 2: The 4-Sentence Blueprint

People don’t necessarily remember exactly what you say, but they always remember how you made them feel. Professional writers use a lede (or a hook) to instantly capture a reader’s interest.

Because people love to read about themselves, we turn the conventional thank-you note upside down by removing “I” from the very first sentence.

Sentence 1: The “You” Lead

Start your very first sentence with the word “You.” Describe the exact kindness or gift they provided.

• Example: “You have an incredible eye for style, and your graduation gift completely blew me away.”

Sentence 2: The Specific Detail

Move into the second sentence by sprinkling in a highly specific detail about the item, favor, or kindness, showing that you actually noticed and appreciated the thought behind it.

• Example: “That silver necklace is the only long-chain piece I own, and it adds the perfect unique look to my wardrobe.”

Sentence 3: The Feeling

Describe the emotional impact. Connect the gift or gesture to how it made you feel or how it will help you moving forward.

• Example: “Wearing it makes me feel sophisticated and incredibly excited to start my next chapter on campus.”

Sentence 4: The Conventional “Thank You”

Now that they know how wonderful they are and how much you love the gift, close it out.

Your muscle memory always wants to write “Thank you for ...” first. That’s fine, write it — knowing that you’re writing the very last sentence first.

• Example: “Thank you so much for your immense generosity and for thinking of me during this milestone.”

Step 3: Punctuate and Send

Once your four sentences are drafted, take a quick 30 seconds to polish the final 10%: grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

By restructuring the layout to put the recipient first, you instantly elevate your note from a polite obligation to a sophisticated piece of correspondence that will leave a lasting impression.
