How to get started:

1. Open an Admissions File: Contact the specific academy directly to request a pre-candidate questionnaire. Apply online to the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis), U.S. Air Force Academy (Colorado Springs), U.S. Coast Guard Academy (Connecticut), or U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (New York).

2. Apply for a Nomination: You must obtain a nomination, typically from your U.S. Representative, two U.S. Senators, or the Vice President. Visit your representatives’ official websites to find their specific nomination forms and deadlines, which generally fall between September and October of your senior year.

3. Letter of Recommendation: While not an official nomination, a strong letter of recommendation from an Academy graduate may carry weight with the admissions board and congressional panels.

4. Complete Testing and Evaluations: Submit your SAT/ACT scores, complete the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA), and pass a Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DoDMERB) physical.

5. Await Appointment: Once you are found fully qualified and have received a nomination, the academy’s admissions board will make the final decision and offer an appointment if selected.

To find upcoming Academy Days or service academy nomination workshops, look directly at the sources that host them: federal elected officials and the service academies themselves.

These events are highly localized and typically held between April and September. Locate them through the specific channels outlined below.

Congressional District and Senate Websites

Members of Congress host these events to explain their specific nomination processes.

• Your U.S. Representative: Go to the official U.S. House of Representatives Find Your Representative tool. Enter your ZIP Code to identify your specific representative. Navigate to their website’s “Constituent Services” or “Student Resources” section to check for a “Service Academy Day” or “Information Night” listing.

• Your U.S. Senators: Visit the U.S. Senate Directory to locate both of your state’s senators. Check their calendar or services pages. For example, in Virginia, Senator Mark Warner’s Service Academy Nominations page tracks his annual statewide Academy Day.

Service Academy Official Event Pages

The academies maintain regional calendars listing joint informational events where admissions officers will be present.

• USAFA: Check the U.S. Air Force Academy Events Portal, specifically designed to list upcoming Academy Days by state.

• U.S. Naval Academy: Check the calendar sections on the U.S. Naval Academy Admissions website.

• West Point: Check the calendar sections on the West Point Admissions page.

Contact Local Academy Liaison Officers (ALOs)

If no events are actively listed online, your local ALO will know about them.

The core objective of any college essay is to highlight the specific skills, qualities, and values you will bring to their campus. To do that on the page, you don’t need a complicated structural gimmick. You just need a classic, reliable framework: Hook, Story, Goal.

1. The Anatomy of a Narrative: Challenge to Growth

When breaking down a personal statement, your story should naturally progress through four distinct phases:

1. The Challenge: What obstacle did you face?

2. The Effect: How did that situation impact you?

3. The Action: What did it lead you to do? (Focus heavily on doing, not just thinking).

4. The Takeaway: What did you learn, and how did you evolve?

Case Study: The Icebreaker Strategy

Consider a student who had to move to a new city, house, and school every two years.

• The Challenge & Effect: Every new teacher demanded a “fun fact” on day one. But listing a favorite pet or color didn’t help an outsider connect with a room full of strangers at the lunch table.

• The Action: Hating the cliché, the student began creating their own real, interactive icebreakers to intentionally bridge the gap and make friends.

• The Takeaway: They learned that proactive icebreakers ease the painful transitions of moving, foster inclusivity, and lighten tense situations.

This isn’t a story about a massive world crisis; it’s a small, highly personal sliver of time that proves the student possesses an active, problem-solving mindset.

2. The Supplemental Strategy: Decoding Short Answers

Supplemental short-answer prompts (like the Virginia Tech prompts) are excellent exercises because they force you to dig deep into the non-cognitive traits colleges look for. In fact, many students write such a phenomenal short-answer essay that it eventually “steals” the spotlight and becomes their main Common App essay.

When attacking these specific prompts, keep these rules in mind:

The Service Essay: Care Over Prestige

When a prompt asks about your involvement or service within a community, admissions committees aren’t looking for highfalutin, expensive international service trips. They want to see genuine care.

• The Trap: Do not write about an organization where you just showed up to put a checkmark on a resume. If you were a member of a club but never built anything, your insincerity will glare next to applicants who were actually there sweating.

• The Fix: Show, don’t tell. What did the environment look like? How did it smell? Was it chaotic or completely quiet? Use sensory details to prove your active footprint.

The Resilience Essay: It’s Not a Tragedy Competition

Resilience is the ability to adapt and learn from difficulties.

• The Trap: Many students believe they have to tell the most tragic, catastrophic tale imaginable to move the reader. Weighty, traumatic essays can easily bog down an admissions officer who reads dozens of them a day.

• The Fix: Your essay isn’t actually about the trauma; it’s about your analysis of how you evolved after the setback. Missing the cut for your dream basketball team, pivoting to become the team manager, and using that pivot to sharpen your leadership skills is an incredible, resilient story of action.

The Leadership Essay: Focus on Influence, Not Titles

True leadership asks how others relied on you for guidance and what you discovered about yourself in the process.

• The Fix: If you lack leadership on your activity sheet, don’t just sign up for ten more clubs. Pick one area you already care about and dive four levels deep. Step up and ask, “How can I do more?” The size of your official title matters far less than the actual scope of your influence and your ability to collaborate with others rather than making unilateral decisions.

The Goal Essay: Lean into the “Non-Cogs”

When describing a long-term goal and your timeline to achieve it, remember that personal growth doesn’t have to be lofty or life-changing.

• The Fix: A goal could be as simple as waking up 30 minutes earlier to practice mindfulness, or trying a brand-new sport when your family isn’t athletic at all. Use this space to demonstrate humility, self-reflection, and an ability to seek out mentors for guidance when you don’t have all the answers.

The Core Traits Checklist

No matter which prompt you are tackling today, filter your freewriting through the exact three adjectives that every college counselor and admissions reader wants to see in an incoming freshman:

• Curious

• Humble

• Teachable

Look closely at your draft or your notes. Are your words proving these traits through your real-world actions?

Action Step: Pick Your Soundbite

The term “Soundbite” is another name for what every admissions officer (AO) does after reading a college application essay. Your Soundbite helps AOs remember you.

That is a rigid mental model—a deeply ingrained habit of how you think writing should work. To write an essay that actually gets you accepted into your reach schools, you have to change your muscle memory around writing. As Albert Einstein once noted, breaking a mental model is harder than splitting an atom.

To write a compelling college application essay, you need to understand how to leverage your blind spots and rewire your writing process.

1. The Three Adjectives That Open Doors

When college admissions officers read your application—and when your high school teachers write your letters of recommendation—they aren’t looking for a flawless, perfect superhero. They are looking for three specific traits:

• Curious

• Humble

• Teachable

College is designed to safely challenge your worldview. To prove you’re ready for that, you have to be willing to look at situations where you weren’t perfect, where you tripped up, and where you had to recalibrate.

2. Uncovering Your Essay Topic via the “Johari Window”

Where do the best essay topics come from? Oftentimes, they come from blind spots.

Legendary investor Charlie Munger talked about building a multidisciplinary "latticework" of mental models to understand the world. One of the core models we use is the Johari Window paired with your DISC personality profile to identify where your self-perception clashes with reality.

A blind spot is something others see about you, but you don’t see about yourself. It’s that jarring moment of sudden, uncomfortable introspection.

Depending on your DISC letter, your best essay topic might be hiding right in your personal growth areas:

• If you are a “C” (Compliant): Did your obsession with perfectionism cause your pace to slow down so much that you missed a deadline or an opportunity? How did you learn to pivot toward excellence instead of impossible perfection?

• If you are an “S” (Steady): When did you struggle to accept change, or fail to balance the needs of others with your own? How did you learn to show initiative?

• If you are an “I” (Influencing): Was there a time you talked too much, didn’t listen, and missed something incredibly important? What did that teach you about real communication?

• If you are a “D” (Dominant): Was there a time when you lost control of a situation? Were you unfairly taken advantage of? What did you learn about managing conflict and/or understanding and respecting the boundaries of others?

The Laundry Room Realization

Challenging a mental model can be huge, or it can start small. I remember being in my college dorm basement doing laundry. A friend was doing hers completely differently from how my mom taught me. At first, I thought she was doing it all “wrong,” but then I realized two important things: (1) she was going to be finished folding clothes much faster than I would be and (2) I’m in college. My mom isn’t here. My Mom is probably not going to care if I change the way I fold my clothes.

Does my old mental model still serve me?

College application essays are less of a sales pitch and more of a job interview. the goal is to tell the interviewer (in this case, the AO) about a sliver of time in your life that highlights a bigger picture of who you are. Showcase your self-awareness. A story about discovering and fixing a blind spot is essay gold.

3. The Elite Soldiers Model: Write for the Reader

Why do we stress daily 15-minute freewriting exercises instead of jumping straight into “writing a rough draft?” Because of the Elite Soldiers Model:

“In the thick of battle, you will not rise to the level of your expectations; you will fall to the level of your training.”

When college application stress peaks, you will fall back on your training. If your training is just staring at a blank page, hoping for perfection, you will freeze.

Furthermore, you need to understand the mechanics of your medium. Linguist Noam Chomsky noted that language carries infinitely varying meanings. Writing is unique because you are communicating using symbols on a page. Your unknown admissions reader has to look at those symbols and interpret them through their own filters and biases.

To get your essay passed from reader to reader all the way to the final decision-makers, you have to focus on clear, resonant content — not a hyper-polished, albeit empty narrative.

4. The 80/20 Rule of Writing: Ditch the Spellcheck (For Now)

Use the Pareto Principle. If you focus your writing in the areas where you are likely to get the biggest benefit of result, guess what? You’ll get better results.

Instead of spending 80% of your energy obsessing over grammar, spelling, and punctuation writing a rough draft, spend that time in these three steps:

Prewriting, Research, Thesis. Following the steps in the writing process is the most productive way.

It may feel clunky at first. It might feel “weird” or “uncomfortable” or even “wrong” to fight against yourself and the muscle memory you’ve developed in high school in order to focus your efforts on the inputs that actually yield results. Do it anyway.

• 50% of your time should be spent on Pre-Writing ( we use Freewriting with college apps because those 15-minute daily brain-dump writing exercises are the fastest way to get words on the page).

• Researching the schools to understand what makes them a genuinely good fit for you.

• Crafting your Thesis—the clear, one-sentence answer to the essay prompt.

When you ask a mentor or counselor for feedback early on, break the habit of saying, “Will you edit this?”

Instead, ask: “How is my content?”

We already know you can write; you wouldn’t be here in front of me if you couldn’t. What matters more: what are you trying to say? Are you able to communicate that idea? It doesn’t matter how cleanly it’s punctuated if your reader wanders off the page.

Action Step: Your Timeline Starts Now

We just jumped off a long call reviewing our upcoming summer onboarding for rising seniors. It’s absolutely beautiful outside right now, but inside our offices, the pressure is ramping up.

Students are starting to brainstorm their Common App essays, parents are panicking about the transition to college, and the marketing engines of elite universities are officially kicking into high gear.

Today, we wanted to pull back the curtain on three things every family of a high school junior or senior needs to hear right now: the incredible value of small/medium schools, the myth of the “Yale letter,” and why you need to have a formal family financial meeting before the essays get written.

1. Don’t Let “Graduation Rates” Scare You Away from Small Schools

As college consultants, we find it incredibly easy to fall into the trap of filtering out schools based strictly on benchmarks. Many advisors won’t even consider a school unless its baseline graduation rate on College Navigator is above 50 percent.

But our colleague Peter—an expert on small and mid-sized institutions—has been challenging us to rethink that math.

There are incredible schools out there with student populations under 1,000 that offer life-changing opportunities. For example, did you know that Kenyon College in Ohio has boasted a near-100-percent acceptance rate into medical school for its pre-med graduates over recent years? Or look at Colorado College, which runs a unique “block schedule” in which students dive into a single subject intensely for a month, followed by a 4.5-day weekend to explore the Rockies. It’s essentially an incredible bridge to adulting.

From Centre College in Kentucky to the hidden gems of the South, there is a massive world outside of the U.S. News & World Report rankings. Don’t let rigid database filters cheat your kid out of a perfect fit.

2. That Letter from Yale? It’s an Ad, Not an Invitation.

Right about now, rising seniors are opening their mailboxes to find glamorous, personalized letters from Ivy League and highly selective universities saying: “We want you. Apply to us.”

The Reality Check: It’s a marketing funnel. Some will tell you, “We saw your SAT scores” but others won’t mention how they got your name.

Colleges pay millions of dollars for predictive modeling and data lists. They buy student information from test agencies just to generate leads. They need thousands of students to apply so they can reject 97% of them, keeping their enrollment percentages artificially low to protect their “highly selective” rankings.

If a school has a 3% acceptance rate, that does not mean your student has a 3% chance of admission. The math is not cumulative. Families must do the math on the 97% chance of not getting in. If you simply pile your list high with these lottery-ticket schools, the statistical math doesn’t work in your favor.

Enjoy the dopamine hit of the letter, take it to your guidance counselor with a smile, but treat it exactly like what it is: a business advertisement.

3. The “Step Three” Family Financial Audit

ESSAY CURE has a strict 10-step process for onboarding rising seniors. Steps 1 and 2 allow the students to dream a bit, explore their lists, and find their reach schools. Step Three is where the rubber meets the road.

Before a student falls deeply in love with a campus or spends 20 hours drafting bespoke supplemental essays, they are handed a mandatory homework assignment: A formal, one-hour financial conversation with their parents.

Families must sit down and answer a checklist of tough questions:

• What is our bottom-line application budget? (At $60 to $90 per submission, applying to 12+ schools adds up fast).

• What is our actual buying power for the next four years?

• If your student is in the middle-income bracket (e.g., a dual-income family making $200k/year), you may not qualify for need-based aid, but still can’t comfortably write a check for full tuition. What is the plan for merit aid?

We require students to return a signed PDF confirming they’ve reviewed every bullet point on the financial sheet. It feels heavy early on, but it protects everyone from devastating heartbreaks come April of senior year.
